I haven’t read Charlotte’s Web in a long time but my MIL mentioned reading it with my 8 yo niece so maybe now is a good time with my kid too!
Currently getting me through- looking at pics of my trip to Hawaii last week, continuing to listen to Midnights and TTPD, going to therapy. My therapist told me to try to come back to the present where I am currently safe when I’m spiraling.
I bought an expensive single ticket to last weekend of Eras Tour so my other new pastime is looking at the FB group/channels for other solo attendees. My kids aren’t very happy with me for leaving again in 2 weeks and not taking them but I started to feel like I was always going to be upset if I didn’t make it happen (and when I bought the ticket it was half the price of the last Indy show).
And finally reading the book Housemates by Emma Copley Eisenberg has been delightful this week, it’s not at all what I expected but I love the representation of fat and queer characters. And the discussion of photography!
Well this sounds wonderful! I love the idea of reading Charlotte's Web and another book my daughter and I started this week, "The Tale of Desperaux," bc they are about hard things in hard times and how we know bad things will sometimes happen but love and friendship sustains us through it all. I don't recommend if you don't want to CRY OPENLY in front of your child lol.
We spent 5 days in Oahu and 3 in Kauai. Tourist wise- we went to the Aulani Disney resort luau, Pearl Harbor, Manoa Falls, and Diamond head hike. I also did Aqua Zumba three mornings at the resort which I really enjoyed with 10-15 women I didn’t know! We took pics at Magic Island beach park and that was the only time I really got in the water at the beach. We went to two karaoke bars in downtown Oahu but we found out a LOT of stuff shuts down around midnight- we didn’t sing and my husband kept talking about how he had never thought to sing Careless Whisper and couldn’t follow that! We also just drove the full length of the coastline to make sure we didn’t miss anything and stopped at a lot of scenic lookouts.
In Kauai we did Captain Andy’s sunset cruise and I learned once again that I don’t like being trapped on boats so we canceled the cave exploration. Drive up to Waimea Canyon and stopped at every lookout spot. Our last day we drove up to the North Shore and went to the farmers market in Princeville. Last stop was the only library open on Saturday in Hanapepe and a small child put back the same I Survived book that is my oldest kid’s favorite so that made me feel slightly more ready to go home.
Flying back to NC and getting back at 5 pm on Sunday to our kids was pretty terrible but our exhaustion put us back on schedule pretty quickly!
We made the decision not to take our kids when they were struggling with the 1.5 hour to Florida! But generally- don’t worry about screen time, but also definitely use a sleep mask if they can nap! My kids love a sleep mask at home but this trip was the first time I used one and it really helped me. I told my husband we must have some sort of parental aura because so many kids talked to us on this trip!
Thank you Lane for writing about the tenderness that is being expressed now. So important to sustain all of us.
Thank you, Ani!

Well this is a wonderful travel itinerary! Thanks for sharing I am jealous!
I am adding KARAOKE to my recovery list immediately.
I am also planning a long plane trip over the holidays with a small child. Her first flight that's over 5 hours. Wish me luck and send any tips! :)
