I think they might be in it for the hate follows. Every time he writes something terrible it blows up a little bc of the outrage. It definitely seems like being sexist *is his brand. Does being sexist just make you conservative now?
the guys on If Books Could Kill (truly, some of the only men I can stand to hear speak these days) pointed out that David Brooks isn't actually relevant for conservatives--he's the person the NYT platforms so he antagonizes liberals--and I really think Ross Douthat is filling the same role. I find Douthat especially irritating because he seems to think of himself as funny--like, he's making a little joke, just poking a little, in the way that you can when you know nothing that happens has any actual stakes for your own life.
Ugh the snide "it's a joke!" sexism is actually worse?? Yes, agree, as I said to Emily I almost think they are in it for the hate follows. There's plenty of engagement bc it creates outrage.
Sexism-for-clicks is just ughh and such a bad look for the Times. Super disappointing.
I have to admit that I hate-read both Douthat and David French. Also I have to say that when I look around when I am out and about, it looks like there is no shortage of kids so I don't get why weirdos like Peter Thiel and his lapdog JD are in a sweat about running out of them. I am so thrilled about Kamala Harris and I believe she will be our next president. Michelle Obama was absolutely on point with everything she said in her speech - I have always admired her. I am retired and my kids are grown and gone their own ways, but I am so glad that you and Emily Taylor and all the others who write about these issues are getting them out into the public consciousness. I came of age as women got the right to have credit cards in their own name, as well as the right to abortion, so I have watched all these things unfold over my lifetime.
How can you stomach those guys? 😅. I need to get to where I can have a sense of humor but the normalizing of sexism is bad for my mental health.
Thx for reading and for your perspective! I love hearing from women who have been around long enough to see the historical arc. We need you bc we never learned it in school!
Yes what is going on with the NYT?! Hot mess over there.
Right?!! Just unvarnished sexism over there 🙄
Srsly if we didn’t have bigger fish to fry I’d start a petition
Like is it a move to try to lure in more subscribers? Both sidism? I can’t wrap my head around it.

Thank you for the "best of" quote and the really awesome share of that Instagram post. It made my day, possibly week and month.
Aw hooray! So glad to hear!
