I loved this post and the reminder from David Byrne about how to make music out of nonsense. It's like blowing a big raspberry in the face of those who would make us believe that their fear-mongering and violence are the "real" world -- when, like you say, it is creativity and care that will restore us to sanity. Thank you!!
This is beautiful. One thing that came to mind was Elon and how he evades even the most basic responsibilities of fatherhood in search of power. This man has fathered, what, 13 children? 13 beautiful little souls who have been abandoned by their father, the man with the most resources on the planet. How many parents who have lost children or had to leave their children behind would do ANYTHING for the joy of being with their children? He is incapable of seeing the value of anything except his own power to dominate and take from others.
100% this! Thank you, Rachel. Even their own personal lives are impoverished bc of their worldview. I don’t believe any of these guys are beloved by their families or have enjoyed a warm embrace in a long time.
Whew this all feels very good. We're a prosocial species and caring for one another is the very fabric of what knits us together. I wonder if connection is the opposite of violence, if creativity is the opposite of indoctrinated oppression? I think of creativity as a reclamation of one's personhood.
I love this! I, too, have found myself turning inward (and also just came back from a 5-day roadtrip with my son that involved a small farm) and am now realizing that perhaps it was less about escaping and more about focusing on care and connection.
Thx so much Allison and this is such a good framing. Getting out w our loved ones is not just escape but a chance to connect and care. Sometimes a change in context (and getting off screens) helps :)

Hi Sara, I loved your piece on this this week too!! So much resonance. Thank you for that! We are definitely thinking on the same wavelength :)
