Ahhh a friend just messaged me about this post and how it’s bringing up distress from our own gyn birthing experiences. I’m thinking about consent and the passive-aggressive responses doctors give--the ones you and Allison list gave me chills. I’m thinking about the time 7 residents (all men) came into my room unannounced when I was in the stirrups and when I ordered them out I could feel the eye roll and quiet accusations that I was being a bitch.

I’m also thinking about the maternal mortality rate, esp for women of color, in this country.

Thank you so much for being willing to share that experience and just to know that you are not alone.

Thank you for this report. I am glad a whole book is devoted to women's experiences of giving birth and I hope health care providers will read it.

it's been my hope that having more women obstetricians would lead to more sensitivity and mother-centered birth, even in hospital systems. Did she comment on this?

Thanks so much for this comment and it's a great question! Individual women OBs don't seem to be able to shift the system enough to transform it, but the more conversations we have with providers and others in the system might move the needle over all!

I had a similar question bc I know that Black birth workers and doctors are proven to reduce harm and mortality rates w Black birthing patients...
